In 2008, renowned French luxury brand Hermès shook the fashion industry when it announced a significant investment into Shang Xia, a wholly Chinese lifestyle brand set to launch in China. This was the first time in fashion history that a well-known French company had taken a vested interest in a Chinese brand, particularly one with a tradition-based design concept. The deal immediately created a buzz around the mysterious label, which has steadily risen in profile since. Shang Xia is the marriage of Hermes Group with Chinese artist, designer, and now Chief Executive Officer Jiang Qiong Er.
